Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) Monitoring Project

The Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) Monitoring Project of Marine Conservation Cambodia (MCC) is a key initiative dedicated to ensuring the long-term protection of the diverse and vibrant marine ecosystems of the Kep Archipelago. Through continuous monitoring efforts and responsible fisheries management within Cambodia’s Marine Fisheries Management Area (MFMA), MCC works to preserve marine biodiversity, support sustainable livelihoods, and safeguard the ecological health of Cambodia’s coastal waters. In close collaboration with the Fisheries Administration (FiA) of Kep, the project strengthens the enforcement of fisheries regulations, promotes sustainable practices among local communities, and contributes to the restoration and resilience of marine habitats and species.

Collaboration and Measurable Impact

The success of this project relies on strong partnerships between Marine Conservation Cambodia (MCC), the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), the Fisheries Administration (FIA), local fishing communities, and all our donors. This multi-stakeholder approach has yielded concrete and positive results:

  • Ecological Recovery: Notable ecological improvements, including the restoration and expansion of seagrass beds.

  • Increased Resilience: Increased fish biomass and the reappearance of key indicator species such as seahorses (Hippocampus spp.), dugongs (Dugong dugon), Irrawaddy dolphins (Orcaella brevirostris), and sea turtles (Chelonioidea).

  • Essential Strategy: The illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) monitoring project has become an essential component of MCC's overall conservation strategy, contributing to the resilience of marine ecosystems.

  • Community Empowerment: Contributing to the sustainability of local fisheries and the empowerment of coastal communities in Cambodia.

A Shared Vision for the Future

The IUU Monitoring Project reflects MCC’s long-term vision: to harmonize marine conservation with sustainable livelihoods, creating a future where human activities and marine ecosystems thrive together. Through their joint commitment, MCC and the of Kep are demonstrating that effective, community-driven marine management is not only achievable but also vital to securing a healthy and prosperous ocean for Cambodia.
