The Community of Koh Rung Samleom Cambodia
Visit of H.E. Nao Thouk PDF Print E-mail

The Under-Secretary of State to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries initiated the first fisheries interventions to empower the Community of Koh Rong Samloem and grant them official status as a Fisheries Community. The visit was a great success, Nao Thuok's speach gave a clear message to the community that the Fisheries Administration is supporting their efforts to protect and care for the ocean. It was a clear warning to dissuade illegal fishermen from coming into the protected community fishing areas. Since the visit all illegal activities by foreign fishing vessels has stopped within the community fishing areas. The Community and relevant local authorities (local fisheries committee, military, Sangkat and local police) were all invited to support the initiative and were explained the fundamentals of the protected fishing area.

These photos were taken during the visit. of H.E. Nao Thuok.

Sustainable Food Sources, The Community Gardens PDF Print E-mail

To better support the protection of the community fishing area and the marine protected zones, the community needs to develop alternative food sources and alternative incomes. Land is a crucial issue on the island. Ownership of the community land has been re-ascertained by the community protected areas. Nonethelesss, the community does not have enough land to grow vegetables. The NPO has marked out a large plot of land within its own project boundries that can accomodate village garden plots. Volunteers are helping in extending the current plots areas and help families that wish to start their garden plots. The vegetable gardens can be used by the community members and also to support the daily needs of the organisation.
