Without the community's involvement, it would not be possible to achieve marine protection. The NPO is proud to be able to share and contribute to the daily life of the community and assist in its development in a holistic and culturally appropriate manner. Marine Conservation Cambodia is a multi-cultural team with many members coming directly from the local community. Volunteers can help to share the passion to make a difference while enjoying island life. The constant flow of different cultures keep the community positively engaged. The sharing of knowledge and capacities is contributing to the development of the community as a whole. This is empowering and continues to help the community uphold environmentally sound practices. Koh Rong Samloem village is fast becoming a model fisheries community that will enable a full ecological recovery of Cambodia's marine and island environments. Basic advocacy can be: developing children activities, awareness and behaviour change activities, engaging environmental events and development of information networks it can also be simple trust and common sence. In order to obtain continued livelihoods and stable food stocks for local communities, we need to work closely and respect the needs of the local communities. We need to work together to monitor and create community protected fishing areas for the purposes of conservation and sustainable fisheries. Helping traditional fishing communities understand the importance of conservation of their natural resources is an important part of Marine Conservation. Finding alternative means of income for local familys through scuba tourism, volunteer programs and sustainable fishing projects has helped bring the community closer together this in turn has provided time for the people of the community to learn more about the environment their protecting. |
